What is the name of this flower?

I'm trying to find a picture and the name of a flower. It has a thick stem, almost like a stalk, and has about 5 flowers on the sides going up the stem. The ones I saw were purple but it probably comes in other colors. I thought it might be an iris, but all the pics of irises I can find have one larger bloom at the top. This flower has small blooms going up the sides. If anyone knows the name, (and a link to a pic) it would be greatly appreciated!

What is the name of this flower?
Could it be a gladiolus? They come in all sorts of different colors.
Reply:How about the snapdragon ( Antirrhinum )? There are different types and colours.
