Can someone please explain to me what is the difference between a Lotus flower and a Water Lily?

I understand that Water Lilies lie right on the water, while Lotuses are a few inches above water. Do they look exactly the same? I kept comparing and contrasting between the two with google and pictures, and I think they look similar and some looks different. I am really interested in knowing whats the difference, especially if they look the same. Just like alligators and crocs, i can't differentiate them.

Can someone please explain to me what is the difference between a Lotus flower and a Water Lily?

you're right.

pretty much the same thing.
Reply:the lotus flower is used in hanging baskets, because it trails. i have red and orange one's.they are very easy to take cuttings of of. water lilies are plants that grow in a pond most have long stems/with round petals floating on the ends.they come in a few different colors.
Reply:Water Lily - the plant is smaller and Lotus flower is much more bigger in size . not only the size there are a lot more different. however I rearly do not know how to say it but I can email you the photo.
Reply:The number of petals. The lotus flower has more petals.
